Evaluation Question 5

Evaluation Question 5: Mode of Address

Audience:
The spectators or listeners assembled at a performance, for example, or attracted by a radio or television program.
Source: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/audience

How did you attract/address your audience?

We used a number of different methods to attract our audience, we looked at a number of different ways current distributors marketed their films and did the same effectively.
These are the methods we used:

  • Facebook
  • Youtube
  • Poster
  • Teaser Trailer
  • Rough Cuts
  • Student interviews
However, we used non marketing techniques to hook our audience in also, these methods consisted of:
  • Narrative enigma
  • False Scare
  • POV's
  • Rock Music
  • Soundtrack
  • Intertextuality
By using some key slasher conventions this was a way that we could address our secondary target audience.

Facebook:

Facebook proved to be one of our key devices we would use when trying to attract our target audience. The main reason for this is because almost all of our target audience have Facebook and this was a way we could communicate with them. We could put up status' informing our target audiences of release dates and teaser trailers.

Facebook trailer
Useful source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-kanalley/teenagers-social-network-facebook_b_3062227.html

On the right is an example of how we would attract our audience through Facebook leaving our audience to like the video or add any of their own inputs which helped massively when we were releasing rough cuts as they suggested many different improvements.

Facebook gave us the opportunity to communicate with a much wider number of people rather than our class mates which was very beneficial to us.

Youtube:

Our film on YouTube
Youtube is a worldwide known video streaming site as some members of my production team had used the resource previously it was an extremely useful resource to use. In contrast to using Facebook to address our primary audience, we used Youtube to address both primary and secondary, but our secondary audience were able to give us positive and negative feedback from this.

We wanted to stay connected with as much of our audience as we could which is why we put up rough cuts regularly to keep our audience anticipating on our final cut.

Poster:

Our film poster
Psycho poster

This is our film poster for The Asylum we chose to show very little detail about the film itself. We included an image of the knife and the killer to signify the slasher genre. Also to signify the slasher genre we used a san serif font. As we have looked at previous slasher posters such as Psycho. We also went with the red and black which signifies horror.

With our poster we stuck it up around our school to inform our target audience of our film.

Teaser Trailer:

Our teaser trailer was a key method of interacting with our audience, our preferred reading was that our audience would anticipate what was going to happen next form our trailer to leave them on a cliff hanger. We also provided exposition at the start connoting to our audience of the setting and the background story behind the Asylum. To do this we made new newspapers with new headline addressing points relevant to our film.

Our newspapers were used as a method for our audience to follow our preferred reading as we wanted to create a sense of realism in our trailer. By editing newspapers on Photoshop and applying new images and headlines we thought this was very effective.

Rough Cuts:

Releasing rough cuts helped us out in many ways. Firstly it was key for our feedback but as we were releasing them on YouTube and Facebook, our primary and secondary audience were able to see how the film was coming along.

These are our rough cuts:
Rought Cut 1
Rough Cut 2
Rough Cut 3
Rough Cut 4
Rough Cut 5

We produced 5 rough cuts in total because we had to make so many changes through out the process of reaching our final film. This wasn't a bad thing though because the changes we made improved our film massively. There were things that we didn't need to include and things that we needed more of.

Narrative Enigma:

We used an OTS to hide the killers identity
Just like the film Halloween we used narrative enigma in our opening to hide our killers identity. This gives the audience a sense of fear and anticipation. We used narrative enigma twice to address our audience in the teaser trailer and in our final film. I would say that it was most effective in our teaser trailer because we didn't want to show the killer at all for our preferred reading which is what was achieved giving our feedback.
POV shot as seen in Halloween

POV shot in Halloween

False Scare:

Our false scare
Not just only in slasher movies is a false scare used they are used frequently in all horror movies. However we chose to include our false scare to address our audience. By including a false scare it builds the audience up for a real scare as they are in a sense of anticipation for the scare, for it then to not be the killer (or anything scary) and then as they recover from the false scare thats when you include the real scare to really make them jump.

POV's

Again referring back to Halloween, we used our POV shots to link in with Barthes' narrative theory. This was a way that we could hook our audience and create a real scary character for the killer iwthout even showing his face. We linked in the sound well with this just like Halloween as POV shots can be boring on their own. Our POV shots worked in two ways one was to give the audience the feel that they were the ones hiding for example our behind the bush POV shot. The second POV shot was used as the killer approached the house this was used more for a sense of fear for our audience and anticpation.
POV as the killer enters the house
POV shot behind the bush

Rock Music:

This was a way we could address our secondary target audience a lot better than our primary, because if they are familiar with slasher conventions they will know that rock and heavy metal music is a strong signifier, this was the music we included.

Hetrosexual Viewers:

Following Laura Mulveys theory that audiences are typically viewed form a male point of view, our final film would match this theory. This is a way our male audience could be addressed by the camera lingering on our female actresses body.

Evaluation Question 6

Evaluation Question 6: Technologies

What have you learnt about the technologies from constructing this product?

  • A lot more about blogger primarily the main source for my course work
  • Final Cut Pro X which i relied heavily on to edit my work
  • Garage Band for creating the music for my Ident
  • LiveType was used to create my Ident
  • Youtube
  • Digital camera recorders
  • Sony Vegas

All of the above were the technologies i learnt about whilst constructing  my media product as a whole. These forms of technology i had never used before and would probably never have used. In addition to this, each one used never seemed to difficult. There is a lot of helpful information online which meant struggling whilst using a certain technology was never a problem.

Blogger:
Blogger Logo

When i first started AS Media blogger was new to me i had never blogged before in my life. But as soon as i started to use it it became simple and easy to use and i had no difficulties what so ever.

Blogger was the device we used to post all of our different blogs from the very start of the year to the end, updating them continuously. The blog would be where we put all of our research and planning up to our final product, all of our evaluations and our final cut. Therefore, everything we researched any activities we carried out ect. throughout the year would be put onto our blogger. We built up a vast amount of blogs over the course of the year and i found it really useful to look back at them when carrying out my evaluation questions.

Not just my own blog was useful our media teacher provided us with three key blogs that would help us throughout the course of the year, these are listed below.

Blogger was arguably our most important use of technology that we used, in the sense that it was used so frequently to put up vital information and receive vital information also.

Final Cut Pro X and Sony Vegas:

We used final cut pro to edit all of our footage including vodcasts our micro drama and any other videos we had made. We initially use Final Cut Pro from the very start of the year. We also used it partly when making our idents and it’s a quick and successful way of editing footage and putting music together. It is very easy to use and has lots of options, effects and useful transitions to improve any footage for example the zoom in tool allowing you to create another shot with out having to re-shoot anything, this proved to be very handy when we had little time.

Sony Vegas is very similar to existing programmes like Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Pro X. We found that it was alot more complex and offered a wider range of tools, which were easier and simpler to use. With Sony Vegas we put together our trailer, final film and also a number of different podcasts. Personally it offers everything that Final Cut Pro offers. However, for us to edit our final project it was much more of a convenience to us as we were able to edit on the move and we weren't restricted to a certain time to when we could edit our film.

YouTube:

I had used YouTube previously before but i had never uploaded any videos to it at all. We used it frequently to look at so many different clips whether they were past course work, trailers, film clips ect. YouTube is very useful and helped a lot with research and planning especially getting screenshots and examples from slasher films where we got our key conventions from. It makes it a lot easier to embed videos and from YouTube it becomes easy to share videos to lots of different social networking sites, this is what we did with our final film as it was a vital device for feedback.

Here is a link to my YouTube channel:

Curtis Tiplady's YouTube channel

Live Type:

LiveType is the software i used to create my ident. I found it quite hard to understand at first, but it became easier when i was shown how to use it effectively. However, I couldn't achieve all the effects I wanted on my ident so i had to export it and reimport it into final cut pro to improve it slightly.

I found blogger and Youtube the tools that were of the most use to me because i used them so frequently for my research and planning but alss for our feedback which was probably the most important factor. I was surprised by how well i could use these different technologies but this was probably down to the fact that they are all so easy to use when you know how. The only limitations we had with technology was using equipment that we wouldn't have been able to fund. Nevertheless our Final film came out the way we wanted it to so i can't say that i would have liked to use any more technologies other than the ones i had used.

I have learned so many things through the course of the year about technologies. I had never used a Camera Recorder before and any other the other technologies such as LiveType, Final Cut Pro X, Garage Band ect. I can do a lot more now than i previously could.

Evaluation Question 7

Evaluation Question 7: Learnt since the prelim:

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Our Prelim:

When i first started media and we were given the task to create our prelim i had no experience whats so ever in film making so this task helped me get a feel for using a hand held camera for the first time.

The task itself was as followed, to create a short film which consisted of 3 camera shots which were, match on action, the 180 degree rule and the shot reverse shot. The video itself was shot in school, which Ben filmed. The clip is only around 30 seconds long due to the very short dialogue and lack of events. After the film was shot we used Final Cut Pro X to edit the video so it ran continuously.

180 degree rule:
180 degree rule

The rule is that the camera stays in line with the imaginary line, which can be seen in the image of the right. The rule enforces continuity of the film.

Match on action:
Match on action
Technique used for continuity like the 180 degree rule. One shot cuts to a close up of the action of the subject in the first shot as shown in the picture on the right.

Shot reverse shot

Shot reverse shot:

This is a technique used in conversations, this is also a continuity editing technique

Research:

The thing with our prelim was that there was no research and planning involved at all, which is a large comparison to the research and planning we did for our final cut. The comparison between the two was that our prelim task took us a few hours to complete where as our final cut took months of construction.

Because of our chosen genre (slasher) i carried out extensive research to require the correct research i needed which therefore could be put into our final film. We used this to include key slasher conventions and narratives which we could therefore put into our own film. The research and planning itself took up a lot more time than you would expect, more time would go into this than the actual shooting of our final cut and our trailer put together. Because i had to make sure we had everything planned before hand, as this isn't just a thing that you can go straight in to. We tried to anchor as many things as we could to our audience so that it would match our preferred reading.

Planning Documents:

As i stated previously our research and planning helped us out prior our shoot here is an example of our original storyboards for our trailer.

Our Trailer Storyboard

Sheet 1
Sheet 2

These are the original copies of our storyboard for the trailer of our film. We used these as a guideline to what we had to film. However, we didn't stick to what we had down on our storyboard, we changed things that we thought didn't seem right. Such as the desk shot, we thought our trailer would be much more effective if we didn't include it

Time Management:

Time management is a very important factor when constructing any form of media product. We had to occasions where time management was important, for our Microdrama and our Final cut. you have to organise a number of different things our bigger project needing planning for gathering cast, managing multiple shoots, dealing with weather changes, starting soon enough to give us time to re shoot if we needed to.
These are examples of our planning:

Pitching:

Before we came up with a final idea for our final film. We each had to individually pitch our idea to our class mates. This was useful as we could compare a number of different ideas with each other. I already had an idea of who i was going to work in a group with. However, it was nice to see other peoples pitches to see their ideas.

Casting:

Casting is also a key factor to consider, when looking back at our prelim there was not much acting involved at all. Though in comparison to our final film the casting was much more important as our actors had to play important roles. All our characters fitted their stereotypes we chose to use no countertypes because we felt that our film was effective enough with out them. We did include key slasher conventions we had found from our research and planning. we included a Scream Queen who fitted the role of the stereotype well due to her costume and the way she was portrayed in our film. This wasn't the case for the prelim because there wasn't as much involved

Mise En Scene:

Mise en scene wasn't used in our prelim because it wasn't needed. However, in our final film we used mise en scene to signify key elements.

Establishing shot

Here is our opening shot, here we give the audience a view of the mental asylum, this was to give an
insight into how big of an escape this is as the size of the building lets you know that it is a large scale asylum. The reason we chose this building is because since a few years ago it has been a fully functional mental asylum. this we thought was absolutely ideal for our opening as we feel it still has the eery buzz about it with its dark, mysterious look about it.
POV shot

Here we used a Mercedes car. We used this to signify how old the character is as he is a Dr in his early thirty's, using a Mercedes would signify his age and that he is an adult character. so we took a shot of him getting out of the car and locking it to give the audience an idea that he has just driven it home, this we thought was an effective feature to signify his age and his social class.

ID for mise en scene

This was key piece of mise en scene in our film, it signified the doctor himself as it was his ID badge.

Costume was a very important factor in  our final cut also, the costumes were used to signify a number of different things in our film. For example through the costume we signified that the male character was the doctor as he wore smart clothes and we gave him the doctors badge for mise en scene.

Our location was ambitious but we felt it would anchor the correct setting for our film as it was an actual mental asylum. But we chose this because it signified our genre giving that it was a rather daunting place.

Rough Cuts:

Rough cuts were vital in our production, the factor was because we were able to get a lot of feed back which we would take into consideration. This is very important because we can find out whether our target audience had a distaste or didn't like anything in our film. we also used Facebook frequently as most of our primary audience used this resource we could put up our rough cuts to this and gather valuable feedback. In our prelim we only had one shoot we didn't create any rough cuts to gather any audience feedback from.

Soundtrack:

Creating an original soundtrack for the film was a difficult process. It was difficult in the sense that we were trying to include a soundtrack that would build up the suspense throughout our film, we had to try a number of different sounds and effects to create a sense of suspense which is achieved in a lot of slasher films i have looked at previously such as Halloween and Scream.

For our prelim there was no soundtrack involved at all. this was simply because of time. Therefore if we had of done any planning for our prelim we probably would have scheduled time to create a soundtrack to make our prelim better.

Idents:

We also created company idents as part of the criteria for our film opening so we each created one individually using Live Type. We didn't include an ident in our prelim because we hadn't been introduced to the software at the stage we were creating our prelim.

A company ident is a way of showing the audience who is behind the film as it is a form of advertising. You tend to see a couple of idents at the start of the film before every movie starts you will never see a film without company idents unless it is extremely indie. Most idents come with their own jingle, theme song or sound. The notorious MGM ident is a good example to show a sound effect used.

It depends on how the company chooses how they design their ident for how much it will cost as they don't have to be extremely costly as they are easy to make on an unambitious scale. But most popular idents are very appealing and don't look like they have been made within an hour. I don't particularly associate an ident to a film being good but i do have my preferable idents for some reason, my favorite company ident would be Paramount Pictures for no reason i just like watching the ident as i think it looks allot better than others like Hammer Studios for example.

Here is my ident:

With my ident i would have created it differently if i had the chance to do it again. Because i would prefer it if it would signify the slasher genre. To do this i would use different colours, such a red and black, i would also change the music to a heavy metal soundtrack to also signify the slasher genre.

Shot Variety:

With our prelim our shot variety was minimal in comparison to our final cut.

This is the shot variation from one scene in our final cut (the bathroom scene)
MS doctor, CU tap, CU doctor, MS doctor, CU towel, MS doctor.

In comparison to our prelim the shot variety is very little. This is a thing i had learnt since the prelim. Shot variety offers many different ways to show a character and can also focus on a number of different aspects to signify certain things to the audience.

Individual Roles:

We all had important roles in our production. i feel i contributed to every single aspect of the film including everything on my blogs to the final film itself. I played the role of The killer in our film a role which i play effectively. I prefer to play the role of an actor rather than a director or a producer because i feel that i can offer more when i play an acting role. In the prelim is was also one of the key actors also but i would say my role in the final cut was a lot more important as i had to act the role of a killer.

Our Final Film:

Finally working in a group was very stressful. I would say that at time some of us contributed more than others however on a whole we all contributed to our film equally, as we split up a number of tasks between us. There were a few issues with deadlines but these were easily overcome. It was challenging at times as our ideas would clash copious amounts but as we all knew each other very well it wasn't a continuous problem.

In our prelim task there was not much of feel of working in a group because we all knew the task that we had to complete. However i would say it helped me as it gave me an idea of working in a group with people i didn't know.

The Asylum Final cut screening

The Asylum Screening

">

This is our screening for our core target audience through this we were able to get constructive feedback from our target audience. We managed to get a screening in our classroom as our peers were very helpful to give up their lesson time for us.

We asked the following questions:

  • Overall thoughts
  • What they liked about the film
  • What they would change and why
  • If they were to make this film how would they do it differently

Slasher genre titles

Titles from the slasher genre

In our film, at the beginning we provide exposition,
as our film is inspired largely by Halloween we felt
that we should take inspiration from the film.
Therefore we provided the location at the start of
our film opening saying 'High Royds' this was to
introduce the film and to give the audience a sense
of where the location is.

We then took another inspiration from Halloween and provided
another bit of exposition with providing the times/dates of when
the scenes are. This also gives the viewer a sense of time and
information. As the film is not continuous exposition is needed for the viewer.

Here is the titles of the film SAW
it is a sequence of titles after the
short introduction, just like our film.
It has the effect of running blood
down the screen then has the letters
in blood like effect, this is the kind
of inspiration that gave us to do our
titles and what our titles are going to look like.

In the titles of Halloween it introduces
two of the main characters, with
their name in big letter the 'in'.
This is because the names of these
two are either recognised or are main
parts in the film. As me and Curtis
Tiplady are both recognised names in
our media society from doing the swede
and the micro-drama, we are going to
do the same as this
